Pearl Thusi has become a South African household name. Having starred in shows like SABC 3’s Isigidingo as Palesa Motaung as well as in this year’s Scorpion King: Book of Souls, where she portrayed the role of Tala. Now, the South African star is scheduled to headline the first South African Netflix Original.
Queen Sono will be the first South African Netflix Original series. Pearl Thusi is cast as Queen Sono herself. This first South African Netflix Original follows the life of Queen Sono – a secret South African agent who fights crime while balancing the dramas of her own life.
Along with the news that Pearl Thusi will have the leading role in the upcoming series, it was also announced that the show will be created by Kagiso Lediga. Kagiso Lediga is a South African director and actor who has worked on shows like Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola, the Bantu Hour and the Pure Monte Show. He is also listed as one of the show’s executive producers, along with Tamsin Andersson.
This is a huge moment for South African entertainment, as it will be the first official South African Netflix Original series. By bringing a South African show to the streaming service, means that South African content will get a wider audience and will hopefully be the start of more content to come.
Pearl Thusi also reckons the new series could “change the game” for African entertainment.
It’s going to change the game for every artist on this continent. I cannot wait for every young woman, every woman on this continent and on this planet to meet Queen Sono. We’ve worked so hard for this.
Netflix officially launched in South Africa in early 2016 and has been going strong since then. With so many shows and movies to choose from, at an affordable price, it comes as no surprise that the streaming service has its eye on creating a South African Netflix Original show.
