Square Enix Claims Gamers Will Not Jump to Cloud Gaming Anytime Soon

With all this talk of cloud gaming and the upcoming Google Stadia being one of the first cloud-based game consoles on the market, the real question is: do gamers actually care about the service and will gamers be making the switch?

Square Enix doesn’t think so. In an interview with GamesIndustry, Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda spoke about the industry and how cloud gaming will not take on as fast as Google is hoping.

Yosuke claims while the Google Stadia and Microsoft xCloud are potentially great services, it will be unlikely that current console and PC gamers will suddenly switch over to them. One main reason for this is because the consoles and PC offer a stable gaming environment already and the lack of clarity on cloud gaming will hinder its growth.

Yosuke believes the main audience for these cloud gaming services is those who don’t own consoles or a PC yet. Welcoming these new gamers into the fold would be easier with cloud gaming as they have not invested in hardware nor have they settled on a platform of choice. Getting them on board is going to be Google’s toughest challenge.
