Square Enix Says It Will Bring More Games to Xbox

Back in May, Square Enix committed to making its future AAA releases multiplatform going forward. This came in light of the publisher reporting underwhelming sales for this year’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and 2023’s Final Fantasy XVI. Square Enix now says it plans to bring more games to Xbox after getting positive feedback from a growing and excited player base on the platform.

Eurogamer spoke to producer Naoki Yoshida at Gamescom earlier this month to press him on some questions regarding Square Enix’s multiplatform approach. “I’m happy to say that we’ve seen a really strong response on Xbox; we’ve seen communities starting to establish and now they’re growing,” Yoshida said.

Yoshida continued to express his excitement about letting other players on different platforms enjoy new titles from Square Enix:

“So now we are moving towards the policy of releasing our games on a multiplatform basis, and we really want as many players as possible to play our titles. So with Final Fantasy XIV as the starting point, we do want to release more Square Enix games on Xbox, and there will be more of our titles released on Xbox.”

Xbox has missed the last few major Final Fantasy releases, only receiving Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion (along with Nintendo Switch) in December 2022. Thankfully, it seems like the success of Final Fantasy XIV has inspired Square Enix to continue pursuing big releases on Microsoft’s platform. It doesn’t seem like the publisher will bring the two Final Fantasy VII remakes to Xbox anytime soon – possibly due to a contract with PlayStation on its console exclusivity.

On the bright side, reports surfaced this month claiming that an Xbox version of Final Fantasy XVI was still in development, though it hasn’t been officially confirmed by Square Enix yet. A long-awaited PC port of the action RPG will launch this September.
