Squid Game Creator Explains How He Came Up With Season 2

The creator of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has dropped some breadcrumbs for season 2 of the series and explained how (and why) he came up with the new story. A recently uploaded trailer showed protagonist Gi-hun back in the games, though this time, he’s trying to warn other contestants about the dangers ahead, having faced the deadly events of the first season.

However, a new mechanic in the games for season 2 lets players decide after each round if they wish to end the games and pocket the winnings accumulated so far, or continue in pursuit of the bigger cash pool. The majority vote ultimately decides if the games continue. Gi-hun unfortunately didn’t have this option during his participation in the first season, so the dynamic has shifted somewhat. Gi-hun now sees this as an opportunity to convince people to stop the games, though it seems not everyone is willing to do so.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Hwang Dong-hyuk talked a bit about how he came up with the story of Squid Game season 2 and what fans can expect going in:

“Of course I felt a certain amount of pressure because I knew that there was a huge amount of anticipation out there, and honestly when I was creating Season 1. I didn’t plan in any detail that there would be a second season. However, I did have something in mind that if there were to ever be a second season, I had this idea of what story I would tell; I thought it would be the story of Gi-hun turning away from where he was at the end of Season 1 and going back into the games in order to put a stop to the game.”

Netflix previously revealed that Squid Game will officially end with season 3, meaning Hwang Dong-hyuk has likely laid out a plan for two more seasons of story. Season 2 will debut on the streaming service on 26 December 2024.
