Season 3 of Squid Game released on Netflix last Friday, promising an epic conclusion to the hit South Korean television series. The six-episode season seemed to gain quite a lot of traction during its run, introducing new deadly games while raising the stakes and throwing a few daring twists into the mix. However, the finale seems to have divided viewers, ending the series on a bit of a sour note.
As of writing, the finale of Squid Game season 3 currently has a divisive 6.8/10 rating on iMDB based on over 8,000 ratings. Over on RottenTomatoes, the third season is currently sitting at a 51% rotten score from audiences (though it’s a mostly positive 82% from critics). Most of that negative reception seems to be solely aimed at the series finale, which didn’t resonate well with everyone.
We won’t go into detail about spoilers, so let’s just say that the ending wasn’t as “definitive” as viewers had hoped it would be, especially after leaving us on the massive cliffhanger of season 2 that teased a few climactic and fated meetings. That said, there’s probably a good reason why Netflix decided to go down this route and fans speculate that it might have something to do with director David Fincher’s planned upcoming American version of the show, which likely won’t be a remake of the South Korean series but somewhat of a continuation instead.
It’s unclear where Netflix plans to take Squid Game next. The 2023 reality-based adaptation of the series, Squid Game: The Challenge, proved to be a hit for the streaming service despite a mostly negative reception (and some participants filing lawsuits for on-set injuries). To fill the void, some speculate that we might get a second season of The Challenge at some point, while others think Squid Game needs to be put to rest for now.
Squid Game season 3 is now streaming on Netflix.
