Star Citizen Dev Calls Ray Tracing a Massive Headache – Crowdfunding Surpasses R3 Billion

In September 2012, the Star Citizen crowdfunding kicked off and now, the game sits at a whopping $218 million raised, with $18 million in the last three months. That’s a total of over R3 billion, excluding over $38 million which came in from investors late last year. With this milestone, the developer has revealed a new search and rescue ship, which you can view at the bottom of this article. The game has been in development for a very, very long time and with new tech like ray tracing out in the wild, some fans wondered if the developer will make use of this feature.

Without a solid release date as the game continues to grow in features, maybe implementing ray tracing wouldn’t be the best idea, if it would delay the game even further. When asked about ray tracing in Star Citizen on the official forums and if the feature would help save the devs some work, Cloud Imperium’s Ben Parry responded, saying that it would be a massive headache to implement.

Not in the slightest. I expect, if we use it, it’ll be a massive headache and time-sink but might give us some subtle improvements in looks or performance if we get it right.

Mr Parry mentioned that he would personally like to make use of ray tracing to make shadows look “crispier” and elaborated on his initial comment, explaining that:

The added headache is that whatever we offered would have to be an “as well” feature rather than an “instead”, developing a feature for a single manufacturer’s top-end cards means also maintaining feature parity for everyone else’s hardware.

This is a very good point if you ask me and the game really doesn’t need more features, especially those that only gamers with the latest and most-expensive tech will be able to take advantage of. Heck, there are even rumours about a GTX 1160 Ti floating around, as NVIDIA mentioned lower-than-expected sales on their GeForce RTX Series, due to the price of the GPUs and the feature being so new and not implemented in many titles thus far.
