Square Enix announced a brand-new entry in the Star Ocean series during the PlayStation State of Play and fans are happy to see a new game. However, the State of Play didn’t do much to touch on the game details so Square Enix sent out a press release with some information you probably missed.
First off, Star Ocean: The Divine Force is in development for PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC. The game is set to launch in 2022 and will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the series. Unfortunately, this celebration is a year late as the Star Ocean series turns 25 this year but who is counting in a pandemic?

Technically, Star Ocean: The Divine Force is the sixth main instalment in the series. In Japan, the game is called Star Ocean 6: The Divine Force.
The game will boast a range of new mechanics that improve on the series. This includes super-high-speed action battles that replace the traditional random encounters in past games. This means that players will automatically kick off combat when they encounter an enemy in the world. The combat sequence doesn’t even load into a battle, the enemy simply starts fighting.
Star Ocean: The Divine Force also boasts large open-world hubs to explore. This is made easier by the exploration systems in the game. Players can now float around, glide through the air and even fly around certain areas to get around the game.
Each world hub boasts a deep level of exploration. Players can go anywhere they wish and if you can see a landmark in the distance, you can visit it. The game is filled with mountains to climb, caves to explore, valleys to conquer and a range of dungeon-like side areas to complete.
As for the story, players will meet a range of diverse cast members and take on the role of a handful of them. There are two main characters in Star Ocean: The Divine Hope:
“Showcasing a diverse cast of playable characters, Star Ocean: The Divine Force will tell a gripping story that seamlessly melds science fiction and fantasy elements and can be enjoyed by newcomers to the series and veterans alike. The game features dual protagonists, which offer different story perspectives and gameplay experiences: Raymond, the captain of the space trading ship, Ydas, and Laeticia, the princess-knight of a kingdom on an underdeveloped planet. Fate will bring Raymond, Laeticia, and several other ally characters together, all designed by renowned artist Akiman (Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness, Street Fighter series).”
