Star Wars Outlaws, the latest AAA release from Ubisoft, has reportedly sold only one million copies in one month. For a big-budget Star Wars title coming from a high-profile gaming publisher, this isn’t considered a success by any means. Ubisoft hasn’t revealed the official sales figures for the game yet, though with these underwhelming results, it’s understandable why the company would try to avoid disclosing the information.
The report comes from Insider Gaming which learned from close sources that Star Wars Outlaws just passed over million copies sold worldwide a month after its launch, which apparently isn’t as many sales as Ubisoft expected. By comparison, Black Myth: Wukong launched in late August – around the same time frame as Star Wars Outlaws – and sold 17.8 million copies in just a couple of weeks, earning nearly $1 billion in revenue.
One million copies sold for a Star Wars game is definitely on the lower end of expected sales, especially with the extensive marketing and promotions that the game received prior to launch.
There are some contributing factors towards the reported underwhelming sales for Star Wars Outlaws. The game received mostly mixed to positive reviews on release, getting a 76 average score on OpenCritic with only 67% of critics recommending it. Judging by the reception and comments under the game’s trailers on YouTube, many players didn’t latch onto the game’s story or characters either.
To address the elephant in the room, launching a week after Black Myth: Wukong might’ve also overshadowed any possible chances it had of getting stronger sales.
The official description for Star Wars Outlaws reads:
“Experience the first-ever open world Star Wars action-adventure game and explore distinct locations across the galaxy, both iconic and new. Risk it all as scoundrel Kay Vess, seeking freedom and the means to start a new life. Fight, steal, and outwit your way through the galaxy’s crime syndicates as you join the galaxy’s most wanted.
