This year’s Star Wars series, The Acolyte, has been cancelled after only one season. Unfortunately, fans will not be treated to a season 2 as Lucasfilm has pulled the plug on the show’s continuation. The Acolyte launched earlier this year to mostly mixed to negative reviews from critics and fans.
As reported by Variety, Lucasfilm has announced that The Acolyte has been cancelled, possibly due to the divisive reception of the first season. The show depicted the rise of the Sith set nearly 100 years before The Phantom Menace – also known as the High Republic era, which has never been depicted before on-screen (the upcoming Star Wars Eclipse game from Quantic Dream will also be set in the High Republic era).
Disney didn’t provide an official reason for the show’s cancellation, though many speculate that it had to do with the negative backlash the series faced for its creative decisions which, according to many fans, betrayed the Star Wars mythos. Critical reception, on the other hand, was mostly positive, with many praising the show’s superb production value and action sequences, though criticism was also aimed at its storytelling and characters.
“The Acolyte” will not return for Season 2.
