After delaying Starfield past its original November 2022 release, Bethesda has officially announced a new release date for the anticipated sci-fi RPG and it looks like it’s been slightly delayed again. The game was promised to launch sometime in the first half of 2023 but a new date of 6 September confirms that it has been pushed back by a few months. Additionally, fans will get to see more of the game during a Starfield Direct event set to take place on 11 June this year.
Bethesda recently uploaded a short video announcing Starfield‘s new release date of 6 September 2023 for Xbox Series X/S and PC. A Starfield Direct event will also happen on 11 June, which coincides with Xbox’s planned Games Showcase on the same day. The event will likely offer a deep dive into the gameplay, world and story of Starfield ahead of its new launch.

It’s unclear why Bethesda pushed Starfield out of the first half of the year but previous reports suggested that the game might be struggling in development to meet a tighter deadline. The delay was possibly done to allow the team at Bethesda Game Studios more time to polish it as well as space out Xbox’s exclusive launches this year, which includes Redfall in May and Forza Motorsport at a later date.
Bethesda’s Todd Howard expressed his excitement in the recently uploaded video saying that the studio was currently busy playing the game around the clock and making sure everything is ready for release. Most fans welcomed this delay, however, as Bethesda has a history of releasing buggy games at launch despite garnering good reviews.
After the missteps of the online multiplayer game Fallout 76, it’s good to see Bethesda returning to single-player RPGs which is arguably its strength as a developer. Hopefully the Starfield Direct event will give us a proper look at the updated game and what we can more accurately expect when it arrives.
Starfield launches on 6 September 2023 for Xbox Series X/S and PC. It will also arrive day one on Xbox Game Pass.
