Developer Team Ninja, Square Enix and Koei Tecmo’s upcoming action-RPG Strange of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, a retelling of the first Final Fantasy game, has received a final trailer filled with melodrama, action and Frank Sinatra. The almost five-minute long trailer for Stranger of Paradise dives into the story and characters, with promises of a revamped combat system and reimagined classic boss fights.
Ahead of its release this March, Square Enix has released a new trailer showing off Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin in all its hammy glory. While the series is no stranger to cheesy melodrama, this seemingly takes it up a notch. More importantly, it delivers on the action, which appears to be overhauled in Team Ninja’s signature combat style. The best part about the trailer? It uses Frank Sinatra’s “My Way”, and the pairing is odd yet admittedly charming.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin isn’t necessarily a remake of the original Final Fantasy, but more of a retelling of the events and stories. While it does feature familiar names and boss encounters, it’s trying to put its own unique spin on this classic tale. The gameplay is apparently inspired by games like Nioh, Dark Souls and Devil May Cry, though there will be options to keep the blistering difficulty manageable with the inclusion of a “Story Mode” if you just want to enjoy the narrative.
Producer Fumihiko Yasuda admitted that Team Ninja took a lot of inspiration from many action and RPG titles for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin:
“To talk about games specifically, games we’ve made at Team Ninja, such as Nioh and Ninja Gaiden, had a significant influence. On top of that, there were titles which had an indirect influence, like Dark Souls, Onimusha, and Devil May Cry, as they had an impact on the games made by Team Ninja. However, without a doubt the Final Fantasy series had the most impact on the game, and there were more games in the series than just the first which served as a great source of inspiration.”
Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin releases on 18 March 2022 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
