Unknown Worlds, the developer behind the hugely popular survival game Subnautica and its sequel Subnautica: Below Zero, will unveil its new game at Gamescom. The untitled game will be revealed at Geoff Keighley’s Gamescom Opening Night Live presentation, though little information is known about the mysterious new title.
Of the few details we do know, the untitled new game from Unknown Worlds will have a sci-fi setting and change its gameplay to turn-based strategy. The announcement from Keighley mentions that it won’t be tied to Subnautica and will instead be a brand new IP from the studio, with the first gameplay expected to be shown at Opening Night Live.

Unknown Worlds Entertainment released Subnautica in early access in 2014, where it was catapulted into popularity thanks to its mass coverage by streamers. It would eventually find its way to consoles including PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch, amassing over five million copies sold as of January 2020. The studio released a sequel, Subnautica: Below Zero, in 2021.
Gamescom will take place from 24-28 August and feature its standout live presentation, Opening Night Live, which will once again be hosted by The Game Awards’ Geoff Keighley. As seen in previous years, Opening Night Live will kick off Gamescom and feature handfuls of new game reveals, showcases and more.
2021’s Opening Night Live saw a number of big reveals, including the Saints Row reboot, the release date for Halo Infinite and the reveal of Marvel’s Midnight Suns. Hopefully this year brings equally as exciting announcements from publishers and developers around the world.
Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero are currently available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC if you feel like playing one of the better survival game series on the market right now.
