Pete and Joe Samuels, the co-founders of Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures developer Supermassive Games, have left the company after 15 years. The announcement was made via the studio’s LinkedIn page which was updated to include a message paying tribute to the co-founders. The new CEO will be Robert Henrysson, the former CEO and chairman of Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios.
“After 15 amazing years, we say goodbye to our founders,” the message begins. “Pete and Joe – thank you for creating the Supermassive Games story that we will continue to write. Your Supermassive legacy will live on. We all wish you both the very best of luck in your next chapter!”
Pete Samuels added his own message, explaining that his decision to leave was due to health reasons:
“After over 15 years as CEO of Supermassive Games, I have taken the very difficult decision to step down from my role and leave the business. My decision is entirely on health grounds and hasn’t been taken lightly. I am, and always will be, proud of what Joe Samuels and I founded all those years ago and filled with admiration for the Supermassive Team and the amazing things that they have achieved.”
Samuels also included a note welcoming Henrysson into the new CEO role. “I remain excited about their future under a talented new Leadership Team, led by Robert Henrysson, that will guide Supermassive through the next stage of its incredible journey.”
A full remake of Until Dawn was announced during this week’s PlayStation State of Play showcase. It’s expected to launch sometime this year for PS5 and PC with updated, rebuilt visuals in Unreal Engine 5, a new third-person camera system and more improvements.
An Until Dawn movie is also in the works from Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg and PlayStation Productions. There’s no word yet on the cast or release date.
