Marvel's Midnight Suns Commercial Flop Take-Two

Take-Two Says Marvel’s Midnight Suns Flopped Commercially

Marvel’s Midnight Suns, the superhero tactical RPG from XCOM developer Firaxis Games, released late last year to mostly solid reviews from critics and fans. However, it didn’t fare too well in terms of sales as publisher Take-Two Interactive recently stated that the game was a commercial flop, pinning the blame on the game’s release window.

Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier recently interviewed Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick who confirmed that Marvel’s Midnight Suns underperformed in sales despite a strong critical reception. Zelnick claimed that the “release window wasn’t perfect”, which led to underwhelming sales numbers. The game released in December which would’ve been prime for holiday season sales, but it unfortunately didn’t attract enough players.

The Callisto Protocol also launched last December and despite mostly good reviews, it was also considered a commercial flop by publisher Krafton. We can only speculate why this was happened but the timing of God of War Ragnarok‘s release (which launched in November) might’ve drawn people’s attention over the holiday season instead of these two titles. Given the increase in PS5 console sales over the holidays, it makes sense that most bundled gifts could’ve included the latest God of War game too.

That said, Zelnick believes that Marvel’s Midnight Suns might find success as time goes on like most of Firaxis’ games. Initial sales are important but several games managed to see increased sales only after many months of being out on the market. The XCOM series, for example, sold considerably well over time but didn’t make huge impacts at launch either.

The official description of Marvel’s Midnight Suns reads:

“Marvel’s Midnight Suns is the ultimate crossover event combining the rich story, character relationships, customization and progression of an RPG with the tactical strategy and combat mechanics of a revolutionary new card-based tactics game. Set in the darker side of the Marvel Universe, you will forge unbreakable bonds with legendary Marvel Super Heroes and dangerous supernatural warriors in the fight against the world’s greatest threat yet…the demonic forces of Lilith and the elder god Chthon.”

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is now available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch versions will launch at a later date.
