Team Ninja Plans to Reboot Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive – Report

Developer Team Ninja is reportedly planning to reboot both the Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive franchises. The company already released the Ninja Gaiden Master Collection last year which contained three remastered Ninja Gaiden games. Dead or Alive 6 was the last entry in the fighting game franchise originally released in 2019, though it fell below critical and commercial expectations. Needless to say, reboots might be the best way to go next.

According to a talk Team Ninja held in South Korea recently (translated by Ruliweb), Fumihiko Yasuda stated during a panel that it was working on bringing fans news as soon as possible. A slide show was reportedly shown during this panel which included both Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive images with the headline “The future of Team Ninja – Reboot of popular series” in Japanese.

Team Ninja already talked about potentially outsourcing a new Ninja Gaiden game to another studio back in September this year, though this doesn’t rule out a possible in-house reboot. While it received okay reviews, Dead or Alive 6 was panned for its egregious microtransactions and gameplay which failed to evolve the series. If it aims to be taken as a serious contender in the highly competitive fighting game space, Team Ninja may need to go back to the drawing board and re-evaluate the identity of the franchise.

Meanwhile, Team Ninja is currently busy with multiple projects. Next year it will release the dark fantasy action-RPG Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, which is seen as a spiritual successor to the Nioh series. It’s also working on the PS5 exclusive open-world action-RPG Rise of the Ronin, which is only scheduled to release in 2024.

As with all rumours and reports, take this with a grain of salt for now until either Team Ninja or publisher Koei Tecmo officially confirm the existence of these reboots.
