Tekken 7 has turned five years old today and its sales figures are mighty. Bandai Namco announced that Tekken 7 sales topped 9 million since launch, with the series’ overall sales surpassing an impressive milestone of 53 million in its lifetime. This easily makes it one of Bandai Namco’s best-selling franchises as well as one of the most popular fighting IPs in the world.
Tekken series producer Katsuhiro Harada recently posted the news on Twitter excitedly revealing that Tekken 7 had reached a new milestone of 9 million copies sold since its launch on 2 June 2017. Harada also added that this was the highest record ever achieved for the series, making Tekken 7 the best-selling entry in the beloved fighting game franchise to date.

A post on the official Tekken Twitter account back in November 2021 confirmed that Tekken 7 had just passed 8 million copies sold worldwide, meaning that the game managed to sell an additional one million copies over the last six months alone. Though the exact reasons are unknown for the spike in sales, discounts on digital storefronts possibly contributed to its success.
Overall, the Tekken series has now sold over 53 million copies worldwide. Comparatively, the Mortal Kombat series still holds first place for highest fighting game franchise sales, coming in at 73 million copies sold as of July 2021. The Super Smash Bros. series is trailing close behind with a around 69 million copies sold as of February 2022.
Bandai Namco is reportedly working on the next mainline Tekken installment. Some believe we’re getting Tekken 8, while others think we might see the return of Tekken Tag Tournament 3. As an added bonus, the classic Tekken 2 will be available as part of the PlayStation Plus Deluxe (or Premium) library for subscribers.
Tekken 7 is now available for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
