The roster of characters for Tekken 8 continues to grow each week and this time, Bandai Namco has added a long-awaited fighter to the list: Hwoarang. Tekken 8 is currently in development for current-gen consoles and PC without a release date in sight, yet the marketing seems to be in full gear as new character trailers have been arriving at a steady rate over the last few months. A new gameplay trailer for Hwoarang dropped over the weekend and fans are pretty impressed with the improvements.
Bandai Namco has now revealed that Hwoarang will be joining Tekken 8‘s starting roster of characters. Hwoarang made his debut in Tekken 3 on PS1 and has featured in every mainline and spin-off Tekken game since then. Known for his flexible Taekwondo fighting style and “easy to learn yet difficult to master” combos, Hwoarang quickly became a fan-favourite fighter in Tekken‘s history. A long-lasting rival of Jin Kazama, he also formed part of the new generation of Tekken fighters that were introduced a couple of decades ago.

The gameplay trailer for Hwoarang shows his redesign and reliable fast kicks and stances. Thanks to the overhauled combat and the new Heat System, this is probably the deadliest we’ve ever seen the character in a Tekken game. It should make for some very exciting matches once the professional players get their hands on the character and show what he can do, though it’s quite tempting for casual players and veterans to try out as well.
In related news, the character select screen for Tekken 8 was recently leaked, though it seems to be an early build or demo as it doesn’t include the full roster. Bandai Namco and Arika have also confirmed that the game will receive crossplay and rollback netcode for smoother online play.
Tekken 8 is currently in development for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Check out Hwoarang’s gameplay trailer below:
