Famous technology entrepreneur, Elon Musk, took to Twitter to announce new Tesla stores that would be opening around the United States. A South African Twitter user, Riccardo Spagni, took the opportunity to ask Musk when a Tesla South Africa will be opened.

Musk then replied to the Tweet, stating that Tesla is aiming at opening a store in South Africa by the end of 2019.

Tesla Inc. is a motoring and technology company which was originally founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. The company was then joined by Elon Musk, J.B. Straubel, and Ian Wright. After a controversial lawsuit, which was later dropped and settled out of court, the three founders who joined after Eberhard and Tarpenning, were allowed to retrospectively call themselves co-founders of the company.

Bringing Tesla to South Africa could help drive the push for electric cars in the country forward. Not many motoring companies are investing in setting up infrastructure to support electric cars in South Africa, with only select few, like Jaguar paving the way.

Also, based on the country’s current and longstanding electricity issues, having an energy company like Tesla in South Africa could provide consumers with essential tools to deal with the energy crisis. With Eskom currently implementing electrical loadshedding across the country, having a power company like Tesla entering the local market could be a saving grace for certain consumers like businesses, hospitals, schools, emergency services, etc..

It remains to be seen whether Musk will deliver on his new statement that there are plans to bring Tesla to South Africa, as the CEO has become more controversial with his Twitter interactions. This might have been a spur of the moment response, like Musk has done before on Twitter, or it could be a serious intention of setting up a Tesla South Africa. Back in 2016, Musk promised South Africans that Tesla’s Model 3 – the company’s most affordable car – would become available for sale in South Africa. However, as of writing this, no dealership currently sells the Model 3 in South Africa.
