The Apple Pro Display XDR is out today in the United States and if you don’t know about it yet, it is the companies most expensive display ever released. It costs $4,999 for the standard glass and $5,999 for the fancy Nano-Texture version and while it is one of the most advanced pieces of technology on the planet, its price tag is rather crazy. If you thought the price was bad, it also does not come with a stand. Users who purchase the display will need to fork out another $999 in order to stand the display up on their desk.

It seems Apple wants to milk the situation even further and now by forcing users to clean the display with a special “dry polishing cloth”. Luckily the cloth comes with the display but when you need a new one you will have to fork out some dollar for it.
Apple has not explained why its Pro Display XDR requires a fancy cloth in order to clean it but according to the product page, the display is made up for a “Nano-texture” material glass which is Apple’s term for a fancy non-reflective material. Apple claims the nano texture is “etched into the glass at the nanometer level” to help maintain the display’s matte finish and the material is too delicate to be cleaned with a normal cloth.
Apple has not revealed how much a replacement cloth will cost for the Pro Display XDR but you will not be able to purchase them through third-party stores. They are also not available in Apple Stores either. They can only be replaced by contacting Apple’s customer service.
The cloth also has specific instructions which include hand-washing it with dish soap (of all things), rinsing it out and letting it air dry for 24 hours before using it again. Talk about being fancy, right. Luckily, South Africans don’t have to worry about this issue yet because the Apple Pro Display XDR has not been dated for a release here.
