The Batman 2 Still in Development After Warner Bros Cancellations

Warner Bros Discovery made headlines earlier this month when it unceremoniously announced that it would be scrapping a planned Batgirl movie, leaving the fate of a Supergirl spin-off and The Flash up in the air. However, it looks like The Batman 2 from director Matt Reeves may have survived this purge as it’s still in development, though might be years off from release.

Warner Bros Discovery is currently scrambling at the moment to restructure its DC cinematic universe, apparently seeking out a figurehead like Marvel’s Kevin Feige to lead the charge. As a result, several projects currently have uncertain futures. The Flash, in particular, is the source of discussion at the studio in the aftermath of lead actor Ezra Miller’s recent controversies. The planned Supergirl movie might also be in trouble.

However, one movie that doesn’t appear to be in trouble is The Batman 2. Warner Bros spoke quite highly of director Matt Reeves in a recent report by Deadline, though have yet to officially greenlight the sequel. Despite this, Reeves is already outlining a story for the next movie alongside co-writer Mattson Tomlin.

The Batman released earlier this year to acclaim from fans and critics, with many praising its visuals, cinematography, storytelling and strong performances from Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Paul Dano as The Riddler. Set only a couple of years into Batman’s career, a mysterious serial killer is hunting down key figures in Gotham. Batman must team up with the likes of Jim Gordon and Catwoman to figure out who the culprit is.

The Batman 2 is seemingly years off from release, though, as Warner Bros is currently restructuring its business plan. CEO David Zaslav stated:

“We have done a reset. We’ve structured the business. There will be a team with a 10-year plan focusing just on DC. It’s very similar to the structure that Alan Horne and Bob Iger put together very effectively with Kevin Feige at Disney. We think we could build a long-term, much more sustainable growth business out of DC, and as part of that, we’re going to focus on quality. We’re not going to release any film before it’s ready… The focus is going to be, how do we make each of these films, in general, as good as possible? DC is something we can make better, and we’re focused on it now.”

The Batman 2 is currently being planned by Matt Reeves, though no date has been given.
