We know that The Coalition, the studio behind the Gears of Wars series, is working on a new entry in the series. The studio announced a few weeks ago that they had shifted work from Unreal Engine 4 into the new improved Unreal Engine 5. The dev team has now shared a new character render showing us what the cast might look like in the next Gears title.
According to The Coalition, the video is a real-time character render test running on the Xbox Series X. It shows us what is possible with not only the hardware but also what Unreal Engine 5 is capable of. Keep in mind that these visuals will most likely change especially when the character is imported into a game scene with more assets and details.

In the video, we get a taste of the finer details present on the character model. His skin includes multiple layers of textures that feature sub-surface scattering so the light hits the surface and penetrates through the skin. This gives the skin a sort of glow on the surface. He also has pores that have been carefully textured on.
As for his armour, the Unreal Engine 5 allows for the finer details to stick out more than ever. The texture on his pouch showcases a worn leather material, his belt buckle is also of a high polygon count. Two things that would usually not be a focus on in a model.
We can’t wait to see how the full experience turns out if this is just the start of the development process.
