The reboot of The Crow starring Stephen King’s It actor Bill Skarsgård has received its first trailer, showing the decidedly different tone and direction it’s taking when compared to the 1994 classic starring the late Brandon Lee. This year also makes the 30th anniversary of the first Crow movie, so the trailer arrives right on time.
Bill Skarsgård plays Eric Draven, a man who is mysteriously brought back from the dead after his murder alongside his girlfriend, Shelly Webster. Draven now seeks revenge against the people who murdered him. The reboot is based on the comic book series created by James O’Barr and retells the origins of Eric Draven, though it’s worth noting that this same story was told in 1994’s The Crow as well.
The official plot description reads:
“Soulmates Eric Draven and Shelly Webster are brutally murdered. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek revenge, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.”
As for the trailer, it has mostly received a mixed reaction from viewers. On YouTube, it currently holds a ratio of 38K likes to 48K dislikes. Fans have criticised the tone and atmosphere of the trailer as being inferior to the gothic style of the original movie as well as Skarsgård’s design that’s more akin to Jared Leto’s Joker than his comic book character. However, some have also praised its unflinching violence which might make for a good time.
The Crow reboot is directed by Rupert Sanders, who is best known for directing Snow White and the Huntsman and the 2017 Ghost in the Shell live-action movie starring Scarlett Johansson. We’ll just have to wait for the full release to see if it lives up to the legacy of the first movie.
The Crow arrives in cinemas on 7 June 2024. Watch the trailer below:
