Square Enix has announced that its upcoming real-time strategy RPG, The DioField Chronicle, has a release date of 22 September 2022 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. The news was accompanied by a new trailer highlighting the game’s story and gameplay.

The DioField Chronicle was first announced during this year’s March State of Play event. It was one of two games announced by Square Enix at the showcase alongside Valkyrie Elysium. The game’s story focuses on a war between an empire and a coalition of nations attempting to resist the militant empire’s advances.

Square Enix provided an official description of the game:

“The era of myths gives way to an era of great turmoil…

The world of men is mired in upheaval, as an age of war rages for years on end. A mercenary band arise from amidst the flames and the chaos, they who’s fated deeds will be sung of in ages yet to come.

But when all is said and done, will the name ‘Blue Fox’ come to be a byword for hope or darkest tragedy?”

The DioField Chronicle will feature a real-time tactical combat system that involves players selecting units by pausing the game and choosing from a menu of commands and actions. Before battles, players can also decide how they wish to approach each mission and train their units beforehand.

In related news, Square Enix recently explained why it chose to skip a PS4 version of its anticipated upcoming RPG Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, opting to utilise the PS5’s hardware and faster loading times to enhance the experience. The Japanese publisher also expressed interest in making “story-focused” NFT games, which a few developers seem to be indulging in recently.

The DioField Chronicle releases on 22 September 2022 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC. Watch the latest trailer below.
