A remake of the classic Bethesda RPG, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, is reportedly in development at Virtuos Games, the studio currently co-developing the remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The original game launched in 2006 and is largely considered one of Bethesda’s best games and one of the best RPGs of all time.
Before we proceed any further, this rumour originates from a now-deleted Reddit post which apparently detailed upcoming projects at Virtuos Games. The report was recounted in another Reddit thread which has fans divided on the validity of the leak, so we’ll present the information we know and leave it up to you to decide.

According to the rumour, the remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is being developed at Virtuos Games with a pairing system “using both an Unreal Engine 5 project and the old Oblivion one.” The rumour also states that the remake will be out before the end of 2024 or early 2025.
On one hand, it’s possible that Xbox, which now has the final say over future Bethesda titles, could’ve mandated a remake of Oblivion. Given the monumental success of Skyrim and the long wait fans will have to endure before The Elder Scrolls 6 launches, it makes sense that Microsoft would want to fill that gap with more Elder Scrolls content that isn’t another re-release of Skyrim. This will surely keep fans busy and make the wait less excruciating.
However, commenters also pointed out that Oblivion‘s Gamebryo engine (which would later evolve into Bethesda’s in-house Creation Engine) is a crucial ingredient to the game’s impressive physics. Fans fear that replacing much of that development with Unreal Engine 5 might take away some of Oblivion‘s charm – as janky and bugged as it is, leading some to believe that the information is incorrect and the rumour is false, while also citing the source as being a bit sketchy.
The fact that the original leaker deleted the post might be a good indication that the information could be true, though with all rumours and reports, take this with a massive grain of salt for now.
