Bethesda may have announced The Elder Scrolls VI three years ago but the game is still a long time away. Very long actually. So much so that Bethesda most likely didn’t even have the title in development when they initially lifted the lid off the project.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Todd Howard revealed that the sixth main entry in The Elder Scrolls universe, probably set in High Rock according to the Starfield trailer, is still in a very early design phase. Bethesda is apparantly working with its new Creation Engine 2 in order to see whether or not the game can be built using the new tools.

We know that Starfield, Bethesda’s other upcoming Xbox exclusive is running on both the new Creation Engine 2 and the old one. However, according to Todd, The Elder Scrolls VI will use different game systems compared to Starfield so these systems need to support the engine. He says:

It’s good to think of The Elder Scrolls 6 as still being in a design [phase]… but we’re checking the tech: ‘Is this going to handle the things we want to do in that game?’ Every game will have some new suites of technology so Elder Scrolls 6 will have some additions on to Creation Engine 2 that that game is going to require.

While many of us thought the game was well into development already, it seems that the introduction of the Creation Engine 2 may have delayed the progress. The Elder Scrolls VI was announced back in 2018 and very little is known about the game at the moment. Fans speculate that it is set in High Rock and Bethesda recently teased a map of the area in the Starfield trailer. By the sound of things, they don’t even know where the game is set yet.
