The Game Awards 2022 December Date Confirmed

The Game Awards 2022 has a date. The biggest awards ceremony in gaming will take place on 8 December 2022 as a live show in Los Angeles. Creator Geoff Keighley will once again host the event, which awards some of the best video games of the year and delivers a dose of new game announcements and world premieres.

In addition to the confirmed date reported by Deadline, The Game Awards will add a new category this year: Best Adaptation. This recognises movies, TV shows and other forms of media that adapt a video game IP. It’s possible that we’ll see nominees like Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Paramount’s Halo TV series in this category.

Keighley spoke about the new Best Adaptation category in an official press release, stating:

“The Best Adaptation Award is a way for the gaming industry and its fans to tip its hat to creative work that authentically adapts and often adds lore and context to our favorite gaming franchises. With so many game-inspired projects across entertainment, the time is right to honor excellence in adapting video game worlds to other mediums.”

As for the biggest award of the night, Game of the Year, some potential candidates this year include From Software’s acclaimed action-RPG Elden Ring, Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Forbidden West, Nintendo’s Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and possibly Santa Monica Studio’s God of War Ragnarok which releases this November.

Last year’s Game Awards delivered record-breaking numbers, apparently being streamed over 85 million times – a number that even overshadowed the live viewers for the Oscars, which is Hollywood’s biggest awards ceremony. The 2021 show featured over 40 world premieres including the first gameplay for Hellblade 2: Senua’s Saga and Monolith’s Wonder Woman game.

Keighley is quite a busy man as he’ll also host Gamescom Opening Night Live, which airs tonight at 8pm SAST. The live event will kick off Gamescom in Germany and feature plenty of game updates and reveals, including Gotham Knights, Hogwarts Legacy, New Tales From the Borderlands, Sonic Frontiers, The Callisto Protocol and much more.

The Game Awards 2022 airs on 8 December 2022 and will be broadcasted live around the world on 40 streaming services including Twitch, YouTube, TikTok, Twitter and Facebook, among others.
