Elden Ring Guide How to Beat Malenia Blade of Miquella From Software
Early Elden Ring Build Had a Much Harder Malenia Boss Fight

Elden Ring, the latest open-world action-RPG from developer From Software and George R.R. Martin, has no shortage of incredibly challenging boss fights. However, the game’s most notoriously challenging boss fight, Malenia, apparently used to be much harder. According to a new datamine of the game, players discovered a secret “megaboss” Malenia fight that makes her current boss fight look like a walk in the park.

Malenia, Blade of Miquella is arguably the toughest boss fight that From Software has ever created – an astonishing feat considering the studio’s library of imposingly tough bosses from Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro. However, dataminer kotn3l has now discovered a list of secret movesets from an original Malenia boss fight design that would’ve given her a few deadly tricks, including a second variation of her signature Waterfowl Dance.

The dataminer made these discoveries in Elden Ring‘s 1.0 build, revealing that Malenia’s second ultimate ability would’ve been called “Malenia’s Blade”, and featured a flurry of strikes in quick succession not dissimilar to the Waterfowl Dance. In the post-1.0 build, players had to get Malenia’s health down to a certain point in order to trigger her Waterfowl Dance, but in the 1.0 build, she could start using both abilities from the start of the fight and, rather frighteningly, back to back.

In her second phase, Malenia could also drop her Scarlet Aeonia attack more frequently. She was more adept at blocking attacks and pursued the player more relentlessly without giving too much room to breathe.

Judging by the footage released of Malenia’s 1.0 build, it’s easy to see why some of her movesets were cut or dialed down. Two highly aggressive ultimate moves (that can be triggered one after another) would’ve been too punishing for players to handle, even by From Software’s standards.

Elden Ring is currently available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Check out the harder Malenia in action below.
