Even though HBO’s latest hit, The Last of Us, was extremely popular, the service provider says that the overall viewership for the 9-part show was not enough to surpass the final two seasons of Game of Thrones.
According to parent company Warner Bros Discovery, The Last of Us reached over 30 million users on HBO Max. It is also the most-watched TV show in Europe and Latin America. Even with the 30 million viewership numbers, this figure doesn’t represent the entire audience. That’s because HBO Max isn’t available in the majority of the world including the UK and the majority of Africa.

Warner Bros Discovery says that the only show to surpass The Last of Us is still the seventh and eighth seasons of Game of Thrones. The show averaged 32.7 million viewers per episode in the seventh season and 46 million in its final season.
But even though Game of Thrones had a higher viewership than The Last of Us, that doesn’t mean the show wasn’t successful. HBO has already announced a second season for The Last of Us which will enter production at the end of 2023.
Previous comments from Ellie star Bella Ramsey suggest that fans will have to wait a few years to witness the events of Season 2. The second season will likely only air at the end of 2024 or early 2025.
Warner Bros. Discovery is working on a physical release for The Last of Us. All nine episodes will be released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray and DVD on 18 July in the US. There’s also a SteelBook 4K UHD version available in certain regions. It features the iconic Clicker artwork as it spread fungus and tendrils over the cover.
Based on the famed video game of the same name, The Last of Us is coming to HBO – adapted by game creator Neil Druckmann and Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin. The story takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed by an infectious fungus called cordyceps. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across what remains of the United States.
