A Last of Us remake is reportedly in the works for the PS5. The news comes from video games journalist Jeff Grubb. Grubb stated that “I keep hearing that’s coming out this year, The Last of Us remake this holiday. I’m pretty confident about that too”.
The initial report for The Last of Us PS5 remake came from Bloomberg in April of 2021, where they claimed that a remake of the iconic 2013 title for the current generation PS5 was in the works.
The report claims that the remake was being handled by PlayStation’s Visual Arts Service Group before the developer was switched to a support role on the title. The remake was reportedly handed over to the game’s original creator, Naughty Dog, who was handed the reins after the completion of The Last of Us Part II in 2020.
Tom Henderson, a credible industry insider, also says that The Last of Us remake could release in the latter half of 2022. Further supporting this could be the fact that Naughty Dog recently posted a quality assurance tester position on LinkedIn for an “unannounced remake project”, but since posting the position the description has been edited to remove the fact that it is a remake.
Naughty Dog co-president, Neil Druckman, recently spoke during Sony’s CES 2022 conference back in January where he stated that he was “dying to share with fans” all the projects that Naughty Dog is working on. Naughty Dog is also currently working on a “standalone multiplayer title” for which the company has been hiring for quite some time which is suspected to be The Last of Us Part 2’s delayed online mode that was expanded into its own title.
HBO is currently working on a The Last of Us show that will star Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, the two iconic characters of The Last of Us franchise. HBO has stated that while the first couple of episodes have been wrapped up, the show will no longer release in 2022 but will release in 2023 instead.
