The live-action Legend of Zelda movie will release sometime this decade – more specifically, before 2030, according to Nintendo. This marks the next major movie adaptation from Nintendo following last year’s highly successful The Super Mario Bros. Movie. However, The Legend of Zelda movie will not be animated.
Speaking during its second-quarter financial results for fiscal year 2025, Nintendo confirmed that the live-action Legend of Zelda movie will launch before 2030, giving investors a vague 202X date. This gives them about five or six years to get it off the ground, in production and released, which is more than enough time to develop a project of this scale. Nintendo also doubled down on a “new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.” will release on 3 April 2026.
The Legend of Zelda movie was announced a year ago. Nintendo is teaming up with Sony Pictures to bring the beloved IP to a live-action format. Currently, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and The Maze Runner director Wes Ball is attached to direct the movie. Beyond that, details are scarce though fans speculate that it will likely be based (or directly adapt) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, considering its status in pop culture today.
While the casting for Link and Zelda has yet to be decided, there have been some actors who have expressed potentially playing the roles. Actor Haley Joel Osment – best known for The Sixth Sense and the voice of Sora in Kingdom Hearts – expressed interest in playing Link while Euphoria‘s Hunter Schafer also threw her hat in the ring to play Zelda. “That would be so cool. I love the games, personally,” said Schafer to Variety. “I played it as a kid, and I still play it now.”
The Legend of Zelda movie doesn’t have a release date yet.
