The Legend of Zelda live-action movie won’t just be a one-off feature, according to new reports. Nintendo and Sony Pictures are reportedly planning an entire movie trilogy for its adaptation, which will span three movies over six years. As of writing, casting has yet to begin for the first movie in this apparent trilogy. Nintendo has already secured a release date for the movie and as promised, it’s well before 2030, so we won’t have to wait long.
According to leaker Daniel Richtman, Sony Pictures and Nintendo want The Legend of Zelda to become a movie trilogy. At least, that’s the current plan to flesh out this adaptation across three movies. Richtman also added that all major acting roles will be signed for the trilogy instead of just one movie. As with all rumours and reports, take this with a pinch of salt until we have confirmation from Nintendo and Sony Pictures.
However, this is probably something Nintendo will want to keep a close eye on first before committing to a trilogy. There’s always a chance that the first movie won’t be as critically or commercially successful as they hope, though given the astronomical box office numbers for The Super Mario Bros. Movie (despite only decent reviews), it shouldn’t have difficulty raking in ticket sales.
The Legend of Zelda movie will be directed by Wes Ball (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, The Maze Runner). No casting has been announced yet, though fans do have some ideas in mind for which actors should play the iconic characters. The highest on the list and popular vote seems to be Euphoria actress Hunter Schafer for the part of Zelda, due to her uncanny resemblance to the character on top of her acting talent. Schafer has also expressed interest in playing the role in the past, as a big fan of the video games.
Nintendo has also announced an official release date of 26 March 2027 for The Legend of Zelda movie.
