The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is an upcoming stealth-adventure game set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy universe of Middle-earth and primarily tells its own story separate from the books. Players assume the role of Gollum as they sneak their way around Mordor and other corners of Middle-earth in search of the One Ring. The game recently revealed its special edition which divided fans after they quickly noticed that Elvish language is being locked behind the paid DLC. Developer Daedalic Entertainment has now released a statement defending this decision.
The special edition for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum contains the Lore Compendium, the Art Exhibition Application a 45-minute soundtrack. However, it also unlocks Sindarin voice acting, the language of the Elves in the game. The voice acting pack essentially adds the Sindarin language to certain lines for NPCs. Fans argued that this is immersion-breaking and it doesn’t make sense to lock the Elvish language behind DLC and out of the main game.

Daedalic Entertainment has now released a statement defending the decision to lock Sindarin behind the special edition, explaining:
“While traversing through Mirkwood and other parts of Middle-earth Gollum will be able to listen to various dialogues between Elves. These dialogues add to the atmosphere and worldbuilding. Daedalic went the extra mile here and hired professional voice actors, who were trained in Sindarin by our lore experts. It is a DLC for the real Tolkien devotees who want to immerse themselves even more into the world of Middle-earth.”
This explanation didn’t sit well with many fans who still see this as a needless exclusion from the game unless you shovel out extra money for the special edition. One user commented, “What a shitty position to have to be in, simultaneously trying to show the value of the DLC voices while also downplaying their worth.”
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum launches on 25 May 2023 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
