If you’re familiar with the timeline of The Lord of the Rings, you’ll know the unfortunate position that Orcs find themselves in the Second Age of Middle-Earth. That’s exactly where Amazon Prime’s upcoming show The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power finds them. Thanks to IGN, we got our first look at the Orcs and the (mostly) practical effects used to create them.
During the First Age, Orcs were hunted to near-extinction. In the Second Age, they’re scattered around Middle-Earth long before their rise to assisting evil powers in the events of the Third Age and Peter Jackson’s movies. Amazon Prime has offered us our first look at what the Orcs will look like in The Rings of Power and it displays some phenomenal practical work.

Have a look at the first official images showing the Orcs in The Rings of Power:
The head of the show’s prosthetic department, Jamie Wilson, had a lot to say about the designs of the Orcs:
“I love Orcs. I love creature design, so I’m very happy to talk about this stuff. JD and Patrick, the showrunners, the very first page of their [show] bible was about Orcs. They have a real passion for them, they love practical prosthetics and design, and they felt that they needed exploration given that this is the Second Age and thousands of years before the events of the Third Age [and the existing Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films].
It was really important for them to treat them as their own culture and explore the world on its own two legs in its own right.”
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power debuts on 2 September 2022 on Amazon Prime. Check out the first trailer below.
