Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo

The Nintendo Alarmo Can Run DOOM

The Nintendo Alarmo could be your next gaming device. That is if you like DOOM, of course. The upcoming digital alarm clock from Nintendo has been exploited and a custom firmware was installed which allowed it to emulate the classic DOOM game. The game was also fully playable using the limited buttons and knobs on the unit itself.

Hacker GaryOverNitch installed the exploit. It was done through a USB and the game was installed without any modification to the actual clock itself. GaryOverNitch also says the process was so easy that anyone could essentially do it themselves. It requires some software and no physical modification to the device.

The exploit was only possible after another hacker called Spinda managed to get into Alarmo’s software and dump the operating system that powers the clock’s features. The dumped firmware then opened up ways to reverse code the hardware and unlock the USB-C port to point to an external firmware file instead of the internal version.

Of course, this means the Nintendo Alarmo has been jailbroken before it was even released. However, given the device’s limited features, it isn’t clear how far developers will go to make custom apps for the clock.

If you’re a DOOM fan, the exploit lets you play the shooter on the Alarmo’s display. You’ll then use the top mushroom-shaped knob on the top of the clock to move and the other buttons on the unit to shoot and interact with the world. You can watch it in action below. It actually looks pretty cool. The display is also surprisingly crisp.

The Nintendo Alarmo is expected to launch worldwide in January. You can read all about its features in our announcement and breakdown post here.
