Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Detachable Cover

The Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons Include Customisable Cover Plates

Just a month away from the official launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, and a new hidden feature has been discovered about the console. It seems that the Joy-Con 2 controllers have detachable cover plates which can be removed and swapped out for other variants.

While Nintendo hasn’t shared any specific details on this feature, nor has the brand acknowledged it in any marketing for the console, some third-party accessory makers have started listing replacement covers.

Now, the covers aren’t as exciting as, say, the PS5 Pro faceplates (or lack thereof); instead, the Joy-Con 2 side covers can seemingly be detached quite easily without any screwdriver or force. They are held on by clips that fit into the slots on the sides.

It seems the covers house the screws which you’ll need access to in order to open up the Joy-Con 2. The renders for the accessories don’t include what screws these are. However, users will have to detach these covers before tearing open the controller.

You’ll then be able to put back the covers, and if you have purchased other versions of them, you can put those on instead. Over on AliExpress, one company has designed covers that match the inner Joy-Con 2 magnet attachment and joystick. Together, this looks like a winning combination.

It will be interesting to see where these covers go in terms of versatility. I could see myself purchasing a set of rubber-coated ones if they become available. These covers are situated right on the sides of the Joy-Con 2, and in every game mode, your palm will be on this plate. So it makes sense to have a textured grip-like replacement.

At the moment, this specific selection of Joy-Con 2 covers aren’t available to ship to South Africa. When I searched the local AliExpress, I could not find them. I am sure closer to the launch of the console, or perhaps soon after, the market will be flooded with these sorts of products.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to launch globally on 5 June. You can also catch up on our South African pre-order guide for the console here along with all the confirmed game launches coming your way at launch and after launch here.
