Ahead of the Nintendo Switch 2 launch next week, the Switch Online mobile app has been renamed to the “Nintendo Switch App”. The rebranding not only preps the app for the new console but also brings some much-needed new features to the table, which are pretty much basic expectations for gamers nowadays.
First off, Nintendo has added the ability to upload screenshots and videos from your Switch 2 console directly to the cloud. This means instead of having to get the content from your SD card or internal memory, like you used to on the older console, you can now upload them to a cloud server.
The Switch 2 allows for manual uploading and automatic uploading, where the most recent 100 screenshots and videos will be uploaded to the server for you.
Once uploaded, the content can then be found on this new Nintendo Switch App. The app allows you to access this cloud content and save them to your camera roll directly from the cloud. You can’t have them automatically download to your device, however. You’ll have to select the ones you want manually and save them.
The last 100 screenshots and videos will always be available to you and stored on the cloud for 30 days. After which, they will automatically get deleted or, if you upload more screenshots and videos, the oldest batch of the 100 will be overwritten first.
Nintendo has also confirmed that users won’t need any paid subscription to access the cloud storage. You’ll just need a Nintendo Switch Online membership, the free version. The company shared a quick tutorial on how this all happens in order to prepare users for next week.
Nintendo has also updated the Nintendo Today! app with the ability to link your calendar to the app for upcoming events, game releases, and streams. Once linked, you’ll get notifications when certain games are being released, when the company is hosting any Direct events, and other time-sensitive reveals. Unfortunately, the Nintendo Today! app isn’t available in South Africa. We don’t know if the app will release here.
