The Order 1886 Sequel Larger-Scale Battles Multiplayer Ready at Dawn

The Order 1886 Sequel Would’ve Included Larger-Scale Battles and Multiplayer

Details about the scrapped sequel to The Order 1886 have been revealed by its creative director, confirming that if the second game were made, it would’ve featured larger-scale battles and multiplayer. According to the director, the sequel would’ve also built on the original game’s narrative and gameplay while also addressing plenty of the criticisms raised by players.

In an interview with Julien Chieze, The Order 1886 creative director Ru Weerasuriya revealed some interesting details about the game’s sequel, which was in the process of being pitched before it was unceremoniously scrapped with the closure of developer Ready at Dawn last year. According to Weerasuriya, Ready at Dawn wanted to address the criticisms from the first game, which placed a heavy emphasis on its atmosphere and cinematic storytelling. As a result, many players felt like it the gameplay took a backseat.

The plan for the sequel was to add “bigger fights”, suggesting that the studio wanted to tackle larger-scale battles that likely would’ve prioritised combat with a stronger focus on creating more spectacular action set pieces. Weerasuriya also confirmed that multiplayer would’ve been a component of The Order 1886’s sequel. Having a multiplayer mode would’ve presented some technical challenges but the director believed it would’ve added longevity to the franchise.

Unfortunately this is the only peak into the sequel that we’ll get. Ready at Dawn was closed last year after facing a round of mass layoffs in April 2023. Unless Sony has plans to revive the franchise at some point, it probably won’t be under the original studio that developed the first game.

The Order 1886 has become somewhat of a cult classic today. It initially released on PS4 in 2015 and was praised for its visuals and narrative. It’s still widely considered to be one of the best-looking video games ever made. However, the game received mixed reviews from critics and fans who felt that it was too short and lacked any real depth for its gameplay.
