Developer Obsidian Entertainment has announced The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition, an enhanced current-gen version of its acclaimed 2019 sci-fi RPG. The new version will release digitally on 7 March 2023 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC after it was previously leaked by the Taiwanese ratings board last October.
According to Obsidian, The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition will feature higher resolution graphics, a dynamic weather system, overhauled lighting and environments, enhanced details on characters, an increased level cap and improved performance and load times. The game originally launched a few years ago with its fair share of bugs but has since been patched. The updated version promises to do further polishing and bring the experience to modern hardware.

The enhanced version of The Outer Worlds will also include the base game and its two narrative expansions, Murder on Eridanos and Peril on Gorgon. However, players who already own the base game plus the expansions on PS4 and Xbox One can simply upgrade to the Spacer’s Choice Edition on current-gen consoles for $10.
After Microsoft acquired Obsidian Entertainment, it expressed interest in turning The Outer Worlds into an “enduring franchise.” Obsidian is currently hard at work on The Outer Worlds 2 alongside its fantasy RPG, Avowed – both of which have yet to receive proper gameplay demonstrations or updates since its announcements years ago.
The Outer Worlds first launched in 2019 to critical acclaim, praised for its witty writing, flexible role-playing elements and striking art direction. The visuals were somewhat criticised for being lackluster but that shouldn’t be a problem now with the Spacer’s Choice Edition. The game went on to be nominated for four awards at The Game Awards 2019, including Best RPG, Best Narrative, Best Performance for Ashly Burch and Game of the Year.
