Planck SSD

The Planck SSD is an Impressively Small SSD With Equally Impressive Features

A new portable SSD has launched on Kickstarter that I think is pretty damn cool. The Planck SSD is an ultra-portable SSD that comes with a USB-C connector, which enables super-fast transfer speeds and storage solutions for all sorts of devices.

The product has been developed by ShiftCam and promises up to 2TB of storage without the bulk of having a larger NVMe SSD attached with a wire to your device. Of course, this product is designed with iPhone and Android devices in mind. You’ll be able to plug the SSD into your phone and transfer data to and from it.

I would personally use this for iPhone video recording as it makes for the perfect option to record ProRes 4K 60FPS video to. ShiftCam says the SSD supports Apple’s direct-to-SSD recording with up to 4K ProRes at 60 or 120 frames per second.

I am actually quite interested to see if this claim holds up. Many of the SSDs I test myself while filming videos for the YouTube channel end up with dropped frames, and I sometimes have to re-record the shot.

ShiftCam says the name “Planck” comes from the scientific term associated with “small quantities in physics”. It makes sense given how small this SSD is. It is even smaller than the width of the iPhone 15 Pro. The SSD is IP65 dust/water resistant and comes with a drop resistance of up to 3 meters.

Users can also pick up the Planck PlanckBank adapter that comes with additional ports on it. With it, you’ll be able to use a video-out feature, plug in additional Planck SSDs, and use power delivery (meaning you can charge your device at the same time). Power deliver is also likely needed for video out and connecting multiple SSDs at the same time.

The Planck is made for all sorts of devices. ShiftCam says it can be used on supported digital cameras, mobile devices, and gaming consoles.

At the moment, the Planck is on Kickstarter with an expected delivery date of May 2025. The backing starts at $125 for the 1TB model. There’s also the $199 2TB model, $248 for the double 1TB pack, $288 for the double 1TB pack and the Planck adapter, $428 for the double 2TB and Planck adapter pack, and $168 for the 1TB and Planck adapter pack.

You can check it out here. I might back this, just saying.
