The Pride Flag Removal Mod in Marvel’s Spider-Man Results in Bans

If you have played Marvel’s Spider-Man you have probably noticed that every now and then while you’re swinging about in the city you might spot a pride flag dangling outside a building. These pride flags don’t change the gameplay in any way. They aren’t even a distraction to the player. However, some butt-hurt gamer decided that he didn’t want to see the pride flag in the game so he created a mod to remove it from Marvel’s Spider-Man completely.

Mike Hawk uploaded a mod to Nexus Mods that described the use of it as “replaces Newton’s Prism’s artefacts with the stars and stripes”. The mod was called “Non-Newtonian New York”. I’ll admit, the name is quite clever because it refers to Isaac Newton’s glass prism experiment that revealed the rainbow. In this instance, “Non-Newtonian” means no rainbows in New York.

Sadly for Mike Hawk (yes, if it sounds like My Cock when you say this name, it was intentional), management at Nexus Mods quickly got hold of the mod and removed it from the platform. As a result, Mike was also banned. In a statement, Nexus Mods openly expressed their frustration with the douche bag saying:

“The fact the user needed to make a sock puppet like a coward to upload the mod showed their intent to troll,. The creation of the sock puppet removed any doubt and made it a very easy decision for us. Both the sock puppet account and the user’s main account have been banned.

In regards to the replacement of Pride flags in this game, or any game, our policy is thus: we are for inclusivity, we are for diversity. If we think someone is uploading a mod on our site with the intent to deliberately be against inclusivity and/or diversity then we will take action against it. The same goes for people attempting to troll other users with mods deliberately to cause a rise. For our part, we will endeavour to do a better job of moderating our website to this ethos ourselves.”

Of course, it was too late for the internet and Mike got exactly what he wanted in the first place – to sit at his PC jerking off to fellow homophobes posting hate comments wherever possible. The mod was uploaded to the Internet Archive and has been listed as “inappropriate or offensive” and the comments are just horrible.

I never thought a rainbow flag in a video game as great as Marvel’s Spider-Man would actually cause so much upset in someone’s life that they had to sit and mod it out of the game. I barely get time to get 6 hours of sleep in a day. Where do people find the time and energy for this nonsense? Funny how the comments complain about people being “snowflakes” but they are the ones butt hurt about a flag. Let’s not remind them that they are playing a game made by quite a diverse team of developers. If anything, Insomniac Games boast some of the highest LGBT staff recruitment in the industry. Guess they will have to mod the entire game.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is out now on PC and PS5.
