We all know that Fallout 76 will be exclusive to the launcher for PC gamers and let’s face it, many PC gamers prefer Steam above anything else. So what’s the reason that Fallout 76 on Steam won’t happen? According to Bethesda, there’s more to it than money. Many have speculated that the reasons for Fallout 76 not coming to Steam. One of the most prominent speculations is that Bethesda does not want to give Valve a cut of the sales. However, that might not be the case, or at least not the whole story.

Bethesda’s Pete Hines spoke to GameSpot and clarified why Fallout 76 is a exclusive, noting that they want a “one-on-one relationship” with the players. This is apparently only possible if they bypass Steam. Mr Hines explains that:

Well because of the kind of game it is. Because it’s an online, always-on game-as-a-service. Based on our experience based on other things that we’ve done, we felt like having a direct relationship with our customers was super important to us. And so doing it through, exclusively, allows us to have that one-to-one relationship with customers, that quite honestly you don’t always have when you go through another third-party where they might own the relationship with the customer in terms of being able to email them or to reach out directly and contact them.

Mr Hines further explained that bypassing Steam simplifies things. Bethesda believes that it is going to help them deal with challenges and issues. Fallout 76 is, of course, a new experience for fans of the franchise and Bethesda themselves. Mr Hines notes that they are “going to see how it goes and how it works and what benefits it allows us to have in making sure that our customers have the best experience possible.”
