The Simpsons: Tapped Out is Shutting Down 12 Years Later

EA is shutting down the popular mobile game The Simpsons: Tapped Out. The free-to-play city-building game is now 12 years old and was released back in a time when mobile games were on the rise. It marked one of the first games to see a popular TV series adapted into a mobile app and has survived a long time thanks to its authentic The Simpsons elements.

EA isn’t giving players long to enjoy the game. The company announced that The Simpsons: Tapped Out will be removed from app stores on 31 October 2024. If you own the game, you’ll then be able to play it up until 24 January 2025. After which, the servers will be turned off and the game will no longer be available.

Players have expressed their disappointment regarding the game’s closure. Many of them are long-time fans of the game. Some have asked EA to unlock the game’s timed features so they can complete everything in The Simpsons: Tapped Out before it shuts down.

Others have asked EA to work on an offline mode. Some fans have expressed their anger over the shut down saying they have spent hundreds of dollars on the mobile game only for it to all disappear.

At the moment, there’s no positive sign that the mobile game will live past January 2025. The official announcement reads:

To our beloved fans,

We have made the difficult decision to sunset Tapped Out. In-app purchases have been disabled, and the game will be removed from the app stores on October 31, 2024. You may continue playing until January 24th, 2025, at which point servers will be turned off and TSTO will not be accessible. The decision to end our twelve-year journey is an emotional one.

Together with our partners at The Simpsons™ and The Walt Disney Company, we have delighted in bringing this game to you, the fans, and seeing how you’ve each built your own beloved versions of Springfield. It has been a remarkable journey, and we are grateful that we’ve been able to deliver 308 updates, 831 characters and including today’s final farewell 1,463 questlines.

As our journey comes to a close, we offer our sincerest thanks to you, the players, who have made this all possible. – Electronic Arts.
