In some rather surprising news, The Sinking City is coming to PS5 this week. Frogwares says that the game will launch on PS5 tomorrow, 18 February 2021 and will be available from midnight in your region. The game’s release came out of nowhere after The Sinking City was removed from the PlayStation Store last year in August due to an ongoing legal battle between Nacon and developer Frogwares.
For those who never got around to playing The Sinking City (like me), this is great news. The Cthulhu-inspired Lovecraftian has received some graphical attention including native 4K 60FPS support and other visuals tweaks. These include improved loading times, lighting, textures and more. The Sinking City on PS5 will also have DualSense support and Activities built into the game.
Unfortunately, the game does not have a free upgrade from the PS4 to the PS5 version. This is due to the ongoing legal dispute between Nacon and Frogwares. In a statement Frogwares said:
The Sinking City is out on PlayStation 5 on February 19th, 2021.
Some of you have been asking about a platform upgrade for the game from the PlayStation 4 version, however this is sadly not possible at the moment.
The Sinking City on PlayStation 4 and on PlayStation 5 have different publishers on record. On PlayStation 5, Frogwares is the developer and publisher of the game. As the PS4 and PS5 games have different game IDs and due to an ongoing current legal and technical situation, this game is currently not eligible for a platform upgrade.
As the situation is being handled legally, it remains frozen for the time being on our side.
Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support.
However, the developer (and now self-publisher) has released the game at a reasonable price. Players can pick up The Sinking City standard edition for $49,99 and the deluxe edition for $69,99. In addition, PlayStation Plus subscribers can get an extra 30% off both versions within the first two weeks of sale.
Players who pick up the game will also get an extensive digital artbook which will release as DLC at a later date. The book will showcase the game’s development from conception to release. Below is a gameplay showcase that switches between The Sinking City on PS5 and PS4 so you can see what you are in for.
