The Super Mario Bros. Movie Sequel Might Be Called Super Mario World

Nintendo is currently working with animation studio Illumination on the sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, though an official title has yet to be unveiled. According to a new report, it might be called Super Mario World.

The report comes from NBCUniversal, which listed a number of upcoming movies from Universal Pictures, Illumination and DreamWorks Animation as part of its 2025 and beyond content slate. However, when combing through the upcoming projects, one sticks out in particular: Super Mario World. Fans were quick to point out the accidental title reveal, speculating that this is the name of the animated movie’s sequel.

Nintendo and Illumination have yet to actually announce the sequel’s title – or any other details for that matter – so this seems to have been a slip-up from NBCUniversal. The full quote listing the names of the new projects reads, “An exciting range of films from Universal Pictures, Focus Features, DreamWorks Animation and Illumination were presented, including Megan 2.0, Nobody 2, Bad Guys 2, How to Train Your Dragon, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, Black Phone 2, HIM, The Phoenician Scheme, Super Mario World, Shrek, and Minions.”

The Super Mario Bros. Movie released in 2023 and fared well with fans (less so with critics), becoming a box office juggernaut. At $1.3 billion, it’s one of the highest-grossing animated movies of all time. The animated adaptation also included a star-studded cast of actors voicing various characters such as Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong.

Little is known about Super Mario World right now. The aforementioned cast are likely to return to voice their respective characters. It will be interesting to see which new characters Nintendo adds to the sequel, the frontrunner being Wario.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel is set to release in 2026.
