Yesterday saw the much-anticipated release of The Umbrella Academy season 3 on Netflix and the introduction of a whole new group of Hargreeves, The Sparrows. In case it’s been a while since you’ve last watched The Umbrella Academy, here is a brief recap of what I’m talking about:
At the end of Season 2, we saw that our favourite group of superpowered misfits, The Umbrella Academy ended up accidentally time travelling to the year 2019. We also got to see the group, absolutely delighted to discover that the Hargreeves mansion where they grew up was still intact. However, soon after entering their childhood home, it became apparent that this wasn’t THEIR 2019 and rather 2019 in a parallel universe.
In this universe, The Umbrella Academy doesn’t exist because their father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, never adopted them; instead, The Sparrow Academy (made up of 7 other superpowered babies) now reside in the home, which is the exact point in time that The Umbrella Academy season 3 kicks off.
While we’re not yet finished binging through the long-awaited season, we can say that the first few episodes are as confusing, chaotic, ridiculous and fun as we’ve expected from the series. If you’re currently binging your way through the season like us, or even if you’re planning on getting to it later, here is everything you need to know about all seven members of The Umbrella Academy and their Sparrow Academy counterparts.
The Umbrella Academy Season 3 – Who Are The Sparrows?
Number 7: Viktor Hargreeves (The Umbrella Academy) / Christopher Hargreeves (The Sparrow Academy)
Previously known as Vanya, Viktor is one of the characters who has undergone the most transformation and growth as the seasons have progressed. When first introduced in season 1, Viktor believed they were the only one of the seven not to have powers. However, before the season was over, we learnt that Reginald (their father) had only led them to believe that because they were, in fact, the most powerful of everyone in the group.
Viktor, otherwise known as the White Violin, has the power to manipulate sound. They can harness this sound and then use it in many catastrophic ways. From levitation to resurrection, Viktor can do it all.
Christopher is one of the new members of the Hargreeves children introduced in the first episode of season 3. Christopher is a telekinetic cube that has the power to induce paralysis, fear, existential dread, and freezing temperatures in any environment. When all is said and done, Christopher is almost certainly the most powerful member of The Sparrow Academy, much like how Viktor is the most powerful in The Umbrella Academy.
Number 6: Ben Hargreeves (The Umbrella Academy) / Jayme Hargreeves (The Sparrow Academy)
During the opening scene of season 3, we see all the members of The Umbrella Academy besides themselves with joy when they realise that Ben, the brother who died in their timeline, was alive and well in this one. However, this version of Ben couldn’t be more, unlike their version, even if he holds the same powers.
Another one of the new siblings is Jayme. Jayme has one of the siblings’ most amusing powers thus far. Venomous spittle. Jayme shoots a hallucinogenic spit from her mouth, causing her victims to have vivid hallucinations of their deepest desires.
Number 5: Five (The Umbrella Academy) / Sloane Hargreeves (The Sparrow Academy)
A fan-favourite season after season, Five is a 60-year-old adult trapped in the body of his childhood self. When we were first introduced to the character, Five had been stuck in the future for over 409 years, completely on his own, after a time jump had gone wrong.
When everything goes according to plan, Five can manipulate space and time, allowing him to manipulate it to his advantage.
Sloane is the only member of The Sparrow Academy to show an almost instantaneous connection to The Umbrella Academy (or one members at any rate). Sloane can manipulate gravity, allowing her and others to fly.
Number 4: Klaus Hargreeves (The Umbrella Academy) / Alphonso Hargreeves (The Sparrow Academy)
From the very start, Klaus has been one of the most chaotically likeable members of The Umbrella Academy. With the powers to communicate with the dead, Klaus summoned Ben’s ghost, which allowed the dead Hargreeves sibling to still be around, in some way or the other.
Klaus’s journey hasn’t always been easy, filled with drugs and alcohol before embracing his powers and learning that he is immortal and can resurrect himself during battle.
As with his counterpart Klaus, life hasn’t been a bed of roses for Alphonso. With a face that looks like his skin is melting off of his body, Alphonso has the power to make others experience the pain that is inflicted on him.
Number 3: Allison Hargreeves (The Umbrella Academy) / Fei Hargreeves (The Sparrow Academy)
Otherwise known as The Rumor, Allison has the power to control anyone with just the power of her voice. Throughout the season, we’ve seen how Allison’s power instantly manipulated those around her behaviour. Still, we’ve also seen a dark side to her powers. For example, we’ve heard her say, ” I heard a rumour your head explored”, and then seen the listener’s head explode, the same with someone who was told to stop breathing.
Fei is one of the more interesting members of The Sparrow Academy. While completely blind, Fei can see the world through the eyes of crows, which she can summon at will. She can also use these crows to attack others.
Number 2: Diego Hargreeves (The Umbrella Academy) / Ben Hargreeves (The Sparrow Academy)
From the first episode of The Umbrella Academy, Diego Hargreeves cemented his role as a weapons master. Diego not only has the power of manipulating the trajectory of anything he throws but can also stop any weapon dead in its tracks.
Even though Ben might seem like the tragic member of The Umbrella Academy that we’ve gotten to know and love, this version of Ben is an entirely different person. As a member of The Sparrow Academy, Ben still has the same control over the Eldritch Tentacles from a portal in his abdomen as he did in ghost form. Only this time, he’s kind of an asshole and combining that with eldritch powers can never be a good thing.
Number 2: Luther Hargreeves (The Umbrella Academy) / Marcus Hargreeves (The Sparrow Academy)
Luther, or Spaceboy, as he’s sometimes known, is the de facto leader of The Umbrella Academy. Luther was initially born with superhuman strength, but when Reginald injected him with a serum that changed Luther’s physiology, he became even stronger.
This strength came at a cost as the serum altered Luther’s body, giving him increased muscle mass and ape-like features.
Once again, Marcus is the perfect counterpart to Luther. Much like Luther, Marcus is gifted with the power of superhuman strength, only without Luthors hair problems…
The Umbrella Academy Season 3 is now available to binge-watch on Netflix.
