CD Projekt Red has officially announced The Witcher 4 at The Game Awards 2024, confirming long-standing rumours that Ciri would take over as the series protagonist going forward. The trailer didn’t offer any gameplay or a release window/date as the game is still deep in development at the Polish studio, though it’s good to know that progress is going smoothly.
It’s unclear how much time has passed since the events of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, though Ciri is notably older in the reveal trailer for The Witcher 4. By the looks of it, she’s also a lot more seasoned as a witcher. The cinematic trailer sees her hunting a terrifying monster lurking in a mountain pass, though her actions seem to have repercussions on the ‘ritual’ that the locals were performing – quite fitting of the franchise’s tendency to put weight and emphasis on your decisions and actions in the role-playing aspects.
It’s worth mentioning that Geralt of Rivia, who served as the former protagonist of the series for the last three games, was nowhere to be seen in the reveal trailer. Geralt’s voice actor, Doug Cockle, was previously asked about the character’s role in the next game, to which he stated that he’ll appear in the continuation but he won’t be the protagonist. We at least have confirmation now that Ciri will be filling that role.
A bit of restored cut content for one of The Witcher 3‘s endings might’ve also revealed a key location for The Witcher 4. Unfortunately, the trailer didn’t really give us a sense of where the game will be set but we’ll surely know more information in the months and years to come as CD Projekt Red continue to work on the project.
In case you missed it, The Game Awards 2024 celebrated its 10th anniversary with a laundry list of big announcements apart from The Witcher 4, which kicked off the show. You can check out all the winners right here.
