CD Projekt Red has released some behind-the-scenes details concerning the reveal trailer for The Witcher 4, which debuted at The Game Awards last December. The company went into some detail regarding Ciri and a new character introduced in the trailer, who happens to be a “mirror” to Ciri’s character.
The Witcher 4 director Sebastian Kalemba and narrative director Philipp Weber appeared on a recent behind-the-scenes video for The Witcher 4, breaking the trailer done while spilling some new details about the game. In the trailer, we meet a Stromford girl named Mioni, who is “destined to be sacrificed” before Ciri intervenes, slaying the Bauk monster threatening the villagers. However, in true Witcher fashion, players will be given a choice, and choices have consequences.
“We were thinking in the story that Mioni and Ciri are a little bit mirrors of each other,” said Weber during the video. “The traditions of Stromford essentially mean that Mioni has to be sacrificed. That’s her destiny, and she accepted that destiny. Ciri is known as someone who does not accept destiny, she fights back at it.”
This is quite an interesting contrast since CD Projekt Red also explained that Ciri will do things a bit differently than Geralt. After all, Geralt is definitely more seasoned by the time The Witcher 3 takes place, whereas some time has passed before The Witcher 4, though Ciri is still relatively young in comparison. The game could easily explore the consequences of Ciri’s actions (and by extension, the player’s actions too) and how she would approach certain situations from her perspective instead of Geralt’s this time.
In related news, CD Projekt Red is also hard at work on the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, which was recently confirmed to keep its first-person perspective (it’s unclear if the studio will still introduce a highly demanded third-person view point, though it seems unlikely).
