PS2-Themed Black PS5 Console

There’s a PS2-Themed Black PS5 Console Going on Sale But it is Rare

The SUP3R5 team are currently working on a very special collection of PS2-themed black PS5 consoles. Now, while this sounds confusing it is actually quite simple. The company are modding 304 PS5 units and equipping them with custom-made shells and other decals which pay tribute to the iconic PlayStation 2 console. According to the official site, the bundle will include a “retro-inspired console and controller. Both of which will include colourised logo inserts such as the PS logo. The console is also numbered.

SUP3R5 says that the custom PS2-themed black PS5 consoles will go on sale on 8 January 2021 for $649 (around R17,000 give or take with taxes). There are only 304 units available and each one has been hand-crafted with the custom PlayStation 2 artwork. It is unclear how many of each disc and digital model are available.

Along with the black PS5 console, users will also get a custom DualSense controller which according to SUP3R5, has been disassembled and put back together with a range of custom parts. According to the render, this includes a colourised PS logo button, a custom LED light strip, touchpad, face buttons and outer shell. They don’t say how they reached this design and whether or not they customize each button or simply replace them with other accessories.

Given how rare PS5 stock is around the world, these 304 units will most likely sell out instantly. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. SUP3R5 claims that they have also made 500 extra DualSense controllers for those who wish to buy one. This means that while you can’t have a PS3-themed custom black PS5 console, you could at least have a fancy DualSense controller which is not the usual white shell we all own.

There are some other things to keep in mind. The FAQ is quite dodgy when it comes to the console’s warranty. The DualSense controller does not have a warranty due to the manufacturer opening the device to customize it. The FAQ also states that users cannot return the console once it has been received. So if it is broken when you get it, you are screwed. They also don’t provide any sort of warranty at all for the console and Sony won’t take it and swap it out for you either. It is a gamble.

Luckily, they claim to ship worldwide so if you are interested in buying one then make sure you follow the Twitter account below for more information on pre-orders.
