Paramount Pictures has announced that it is developing another Ninja Turtles movie. The news of a third Ninja Turtles movie comes almost three years after the second movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows was a major bust in 2016.
Paramount has hired Andrew Dodge to write the script for this third instalment of the reboot movies. The first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie in this new franchise was released in 2014 and was received modestly, making $493 million worldwide. The second movie, which was released in 2017, made about half of that, coming in at around $245 worldwide. The failure of the second movie makes the making of a third Ninja Turtles movie such a surprise.
The studio has hired again Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller to produce this new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.
It remains to be seen whether Megan Fox will return for her role as April O’Neil, which she first portrayed in the 2014 movie, and reprised again in the 2017 sequel. The previous two Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies saw Pete Ploszek as Leonardo, Alan Ritchson as Raphael, Noel Fisher as Michelangelo, and Jeremy Howard as Donatello. No news yet either on whether they will return to reprise their roles as the pizza-loving teenage turtles.
Before the two previous Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies were released by Paramount, New Line released three low-budget movies. The first movie was a surprise hit for the studio when it took in $202 million worldwide in 1990. The other two didn’t fare so well. The second movie made $78 and the third Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie from the 90s only made $42 million.
History seems to be repeating itself, with fans of the franchise questioning why the studio would be making another movie when the sequel was such a disappointment. However, Variety reports that Paramount hopes this new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie will breathe life back into the franchise.
