A new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game has been announced and it’s based on the acclaimed comic book series, TMNT: The Last Ronin. The new game was announced by publisher THQ Nordic and developer Black Forest Games, best known for developing the recent Destroy All Humans! remakes. According to early information, it’s inspired by PlayStation’s God of War franchise.
TMNT: The Last Ronin was a five-issue miniseries created by Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird, Tom Waltz and Andy Kuhn, published in October 2020 under IDW Publishing. It’s a grittier take on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles story and follows lone survivor Michelangelo in a post-apocalyptic setting. As the description states, “In a future, battle-ravaged New York City, a lone surviving Turtle embarks on a seemingly hopeless mission seeking justice for the family he lost.”

That’s about all the details we have on the game apart from the announcement teaser trailer which shows four candles slowly flickering out, leaving the last candle burning. Obviously, it’s a metaphor for the “death” of the other Turtles, leaving Michelangelo as the sole survivor.
Black Forest Games delivered some fantastic remakes with Destroy All Humans! series, so there’s hope that the studio will receive all the funding it needs from THQ Nordic to make this adaptation something worthy of its popular source material.
Interestingly enough, the game was already announced earlier this year by Paramount Global’s senior vice president for games and emerging media, Doug Rosen, who described it as an ambitious AAA game inspired by the God of War series, though we don’t exactly know to what extent or if it will be as violent. Rosen also stated that it’s “a few years off” from release, so we might be in for a long wait.
TMNT: The Last Ronin is currently in development for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Check out the announcement trailer below:
